Young Girl’s Newsboy Cap

I have been crocheting since I was 5 years old, and have been creating my own patterns for a couple of years now. Today I finally got around to writing up my latest creation and posting the pattern online.

Materials:

Yarn:   1 ball of Red Heart, Gumdrop, in Grape, (100g – 145m / 3.5oz – 158yds)

Hook:  5.5mm, US: I-9

15mm buttons, x 2

Stiches:

(the pattern is written using UK/ Australian terminology)

MR = Magic Ring

ch = chain

slst = slip stitch

htr = half treble (US, hdc = half double crochet)

dc = double crochet (US, sc = single crochet)

Sizing:

Approx: 54cm circumference

Pattern

Hat

MR

Round 1 – ch 2, 7 htr into ring, join in top of ch2 with slst   (8)

Round 2 – ch 2, 1 htr into same place as ch 2, (2 htr in next st) x 7, join with a stst(16)

Round 3 – ch 2, 2 htr into next stitch, (1 htr into next stitch, 2 htr into next stitch) x 7, join (24)

Round 4 – ch 2, 1 htr into next stitch, 2 htr into next stitch, (2 htr in next 2 sts, 2 htr into next stitch) x 7, join  (32)

Round 5 – ch 2, 2 htr into next 2 stitches, 2 htr into next stitch, (3 htr into next 3 sts, 2 htr into next stitch) x 7, join  (40)

Round 6 – ch 2, 3 htr into next 3 stitches, 2 htr into next stitch, (4 htr into next 4 stitches, 2 htr into next stitch) x 7, join  (48)

Round 7 – ch 2, 4 htr into next 4 stitches, 2 htr into next stitch, (5 htr into next 5 stitches, 2 htr into next stitch) x 7, join  (56)

Round 8 – ch 2, 5 htr into next 5 stitches, 2 htr into next stitch, (6 htr into next 6 stitches, 2 htr into next stitch) x 7, join  (64)

Round 9 – ch 2, 6 htr into next 6 stitches, 2 htr into next stitch, (7 htr into next 7 stitches, 2 htr into next stitch) x 7, join  (72)

(NB:  the diameter should now measure approximately, 17.5 cm or 6.5 inches)

Round 10 to 19 – ch 2, 71 htr in next 71 stitches, join (72 stitches), break off yarn and weave in loose ends.

 

Brim.

Starting at the back seam count 25 stitches and insert hook into the next stitch(26th stitch), pull yarn through and fasten

Row 1 – Ch1, 1dc in same place as ch1, 2dc in the next stitch, (1htr into next stitch, 2 htr in the next stitch) x9, 1 htr into next stitch, 2dc into next two stitches, break off yarn and weave in loose ends

Row 2 – insert hook into the 25th stitch from the back seam (this will be the stitch just before you started row 1 of the brim), pull yarn through and fasten.  Ch 1, 1 dc in same place as ch 1, (you will now start working into the stitches of the brim), 4 dc, 28 htr, 4dc into next 4sts, 2 dc into next stitch, break yarn and weave in loose ends

Row 3 – insert hook into back seam and pull yarn through, ch1, dc into each stitch around the hat and the brim, join with a slip stitch, break of yarn and weave in loose ends

 

Band

Make 36 chain (1st 2 ch will count as a htr), starting in the 3rd chain from the hook, make 33 htr, 5 htr in the last chain, you will now be working on the other side of the chain, make 33 htr, 3 htr into next stitch, join at top of first 2 htr.

Leave enough yarn attached to sew the band to the hat.

Sew the band to the hat and weave in loose ends.

Sew a button to each end of the band.
